North Carolina Zoo: Located in Asheboro, N.C. Zoo is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s finest zoos. Boone’s Cave Park: The great hunter and pioneer hero Daniel Boone was only 16 when his family settled on the banks of the Yadkin River in the spring of 1750. Visit this 110-acre park that many believe to be the site of the Boone family homestead overlooking the river. The park includes a picnic area, several hiking trails and a small cave thought to be Daniel Boone's hideout. Some three dozen species of native wildflowers can be seen here including Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel and, at 154 feet, the state's tallest Eastern Cottonwood tree. Boone's Cave Park is near the small community of Churchland in Davidson County. Hours: Now Open 8a - Sunset. (Call 336 242-4285 or visit www.davidsoncountync.com/historic.htm

Old Salem: Welcome to Old Salem Museums and Gardens, the most authentic and comprehensive history attraction in the country. Find yourself in another time and place by discovering our four unique museums: More information at www.oldsalem.org

Pilot Mountain: Approach from any direction and see Pilot Mountain rising more than 1,400 feet above the rolling countryside of the upper Piedmont plateau. Dedicated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976, this solitary peak is the centerpiece of Pilot Mountain State Park. More information at  http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject//visit/pimo/home.html

Hanging Rock State Park: Not far from the cities of the Triad area, off the four-lane highways there's another North Carolina to be discovered—sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock, quiet forests and cascading waterfalls, views of the piedmont plateau that stretch for miles. Hike the trails of Hanging Rock State Park and let nature put life's hectic pace in perspective... Join an interpretive program and discover something new about nature's bounty. Nestled in the hills is a cool mountain lake that beckons to swimmers and fishermen. Picnic areas and campgrounds lend themselves to time spent with family and friends.  Complete information at http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/haro/home.html
